What is a .IMF file?
IMF is the module format of Imago Orpheus, a DOS tracker that supported up to 32 channels and dual sample banks. The same extension is also the id Software Music Format, the raw OPL register stream behind Commander Keen and Wolfenstein 3D.

A module is not recorded audio: it is a bank of instrument samples plus a pattern score saying which sample to trigger, on which channel, at which row, so playing one means running a tracker engine.
