What is a .XLS file?
XLS is the legacy binary Microsoft Excel format used before Office 2007, storing cells in BIFF records inside an OLE2 compound file.

- The BIFF8 .xls format was Excel’s default from 1997 until XLSX replaced it in Office 2007.
- XLS uses Microsoft’s BIFF (Binary Interchange File Format) and is capped at 65,536 rows per sheet because Excel addressed rows with 16 bits.
- Like a .doc, an .xls is an OLE compound file, a structured container that early macro viruses such as Laroux spread through in the 1990s.
