What is a .DOTX file?

DOTX is a Microsoft Word template - the same zipped XML package as DOCX, used as the starting point for new documents.

Did you know
  • A DOTX provides the starting layout and styles for new Word documents.
  • The “x” marks it as the XML-based, macro-free template introduced with the Office 2007 file formats.
  • Saving a document as .dotx turns it into a reusable starting point, which Word offers from its New screen rather than opening for direct editing.
  • Under the hood a .DOTX file is really a ZIP archive - rename it to .zip and you can browse the files inside.
What Analyser shows you
Open and read Microsoft Office documents - modern Word, Excel and PowerPoint (DOCX, XLSX, PPTX), their template, macro-enabled and slideshow variants (DOTX, XLTX, POTX, DOCM, XLSM, PPTM, PPSX), the binary Excel workbook (XLSB), and the legacy 97-2003 binaries (DOC, XLS, PPT) - plus the OpenDocument family in every shape: zipped and flat single-XML text, spreadsheets, presentations and graphics (ODT, ODS, ODP, ODG, FODT, FODS), templates (OTT, OTS, OTP, OTG), legacy StarOffice (SXW, SXC, SXD), and EPUB e-books, shown as page previews with selectable text, tables, sheets and slides. Excel workbooks (XLSX and its macro/template variants, plus the binary XLSB) and OpenDocument spreadsheets (ODS) additionally open in a full analysis workbench alongside the sheet preview - a virtualised grid with sort, filter, search and column tools, a group-by summary, and a chart builder - to explore the data itself, not just preview it.
