What is a .SCN file?
The .scn extension is shared by scene and scenario files from several unrelated programs - game engines, strategy games and simulators.
Godot binary scene
- What it is
- A Godot Engine binary scene - one scene tree with its nodes, properties and the paths to the external resources it pulls in, saved in the engine's compact binary resource format rather than the readable .tscn. Analyser reads the resource header.
- How to tell it apart
- A Godot binary resource begins with the ASCII magic RSRC.
Game scenario
- What it is
- A strategy-game scenario - the starting map, players, units and victory conditions for OpenTTD, Age of Empires or SimCity 2000. Each game uses its own binary layout, so Analyser identifies it and inspects the bytes.
- How to tell it apart
- Scenario files are binary and share no signature across games.
Text scene or scenario
- What it is
- A plain-text scene description - an Orbiter space-simulator scenario or a Behringer X32 mixer scene, both written as readable settings blocks. Analyser opens it as text.
- How to tell it apart
- These are human-readable text.
- Did you know
- Depth of analysis
- .SCN is an identification-grade format: Analyser recognises it from its bytes and decodes the header metadata it carries, rather than opening it in a full viewer. Formats that do get a full viewer are marked "Full" on the formats page.
- Open a .SCN file
- Drag a .SCN file onto the Analyser home page (or tap to pick one). It is identified entirely in your browser - nothing is uploaded, there is no account, and it works offline once installed.
