What is a .JIF file?
JIF is the JPEG Interchange Format, the bare image stream defined by the JPEG standard itself - files with this extension are ordinary JPEG images, now usually seen as .jpg or .jfif.

- JIF was the original 1992 JPEG interchange naming, quickly superseded by JFIF and the familiar .jpg.
- JFIF is not just a renamed JIF - it is a stricter specification layered on top of the standard’s bare interchange format, pinning down the colour space and adding the APP0 header.
- The original JPEG spec defined only the compression, leaving file storage to add-ons like this one.
- The bare .jif extension never caught on - JFIF-formatted files under .jpg became the de facto standard almost immediately.
