What is a .IGES file?
IGES is an older standard CAD exchange format for 3D models and surfaces.

- IGES was the first widely used CAD exchange format, published in the United States in 1980.
- IGES grew out of a 1970s United States Air Force programme aimed at making rival CAD systems talk to each other.
- The standard was developed with help from the National Bureau of Standards, Boeing and General Electric.
- The “I” stands for Initial - IGES was always meant as a first step towards fuller CAD data exchange rather than a finished, all-encompassing standard.
- Its first version was adopted as the American national standard ANSI Y14.26M.

STEP/IGES/BREP are tessellated with OpenCASCADE and STEP shows its originating CAD system, version and AP203/214/242 protocol; 3MF and AMF let you inspect each model and assembly on the build plate individually, and any pictures a 3MF package carries - its own thumbnail, the build-plate renders slicers such as Bambu Studio and OrcaSlicer write, and texture maps - are extracted and shown with it. Wavefront material libraries (MTL) are broken out into each material with its colours, shininess, opacity and the texture files it references.
