What is a .OUT file?
The .out extension names both a compiled Unix executable and the plain text a program dumped to a file.
Compiled executable
- What it is
- A compiled Unix executable - "a.out" (assembler output) is the name a C compiler gives its result when no output name is set, and modern toolchains still write an ELF binary under it. Analyser reads the executable header.

- An ELF executable begins with the bytes 7F E L F.
Program output log
- What it is
- A program output file - the text a batch job, build or script redirected to disk as a log. Analyser opens it as text with a source preview, line count and metadata.

- .OUT is an identification-grade format: Analyser recognises it from its bytes and decodes the header metadata it carries, rather than opening it in a full viewer. Formats that do get a full viewer are marked "Full" on the formats page.
