What is a .OLD file?

- A .old file is a backup copy, the convention of renaming a file with .old before replacing it so the previous version can be restored.
- Installers and configuration tools often rename the file they are about to overwrite to .old as a safety net.
- Because the extension is generic, the real contents could be anything - removing the .old usually restores the original name.
