What is a .IDL file?
IDL is an Interface Definition Language file - a language-neutral description of an API's interfaces, methods and data types. Microsoft COM/OLE uses MIDL .idl files to generate type libraries and marshalling code; CORBA and other RPC systems use the same idea. The same extension is also source for IDL, the Interactive Data Language long used in astronomy and remote sensing.

- Microsoft's MIDL compiler turns a COM .idl file into a binary type library (.tlb) plus the C/C++ proxy-stub code that lets components call each other across process boundaries.
- The same idea drives CORBA IDL, standardised by the Object Management Group around 1991, which let a program written in C++ call one written in Java across a network.
- IDL is deliberately language-neutral: it describes only the shape of an interface - its methods, arguments and types - so each side can be written in a different language and still interoperate.

- .IDL is an identification-grade format: Analyser recognises it from its bytes and decodes the header metadata it carries, rather than opening it in a full viewer. Formats that do get a full viewer are marked "Full" on the formats page.
